Ahoi Ashtami , also called ‘Ahoi Aathe’ is an important Hindu festival that is
celebrated by mothers for the well-being of their kids. It is usually celebrated four
days after Karwa Chauth and eight days before Diwali across different parts of the
country. As per the Purnimant calender, Ahoi Ashtami falls in the month of Kartik
and as per the Amanta calendar in South India, this auspicious day falls in the month
of Ashwin. It is just the name of the month that differentiates, however, the Ahoi
Ashtami falls on the same day in the entire country.
Ahoi Ashtami is observed similar to Karwa Chauth as women abstain from having
water and food throughout the entire day. However, unlike Karwa Chauth, Ahoi
Ashtmi’s fast is kept by mothers for the well-being of their children, and the fast is
broken only after the sighting of the stars in the sky.
Ahoi Ashtami Worshipping Method
On the day of Ahoi Ashtami, a picture of Ahoi Mata along with the picture of She and
her seven sons is drawn on the ocher by women. Then an urn is filled with water and
it is kept at a place of worship. Next, the Ahoi Mata is worshipped using rice and roli,
and sweet poo or flour pudding is offered as prasad to her. In addition to this, the
top story of Ahoi Mata is also listened to by women with seven grains of wheat in
their hands. Once the stars come out, women offer arghya and break their fast.
