Pitru Paksha is a lot more than just no shopping, no celebrations, not eating non-veg,
and all the negative things attached! Also, known as Shradh, Pitru Paksha is a 16-day
period during which people pay homage to their ancestors who have departed from
this materialistic world, according to the Hindu Calender. This entire period is
marked by offering prayers, food, and other items as daan to the needy and the
priests in the temples.
People perform all necessary rituals and prayers in respect and remembrance of the
ancestors who have left the world for the heavenly abode and to wish them well
wherever they are.
Food prepared for Pitru Paksha is offered to specific animals, like crows, dogs, cows,
and ants due to the belief that the deceased ones come in the avatar of these
animals on earth in search of food and water. Thus, feeding them is considered
equivalent to feeding the deceased ancestors.
How Pitru Paksha or Shradh is Performed?
It is the male member, usually the eldest male member of the family who performs
the shradh puja with the help of the priest. The puja begins by performing havan at
home, after it, rice is offered to the departed souls, which is followed by offering
food to the priest.
Once Dakshina and Daan are offered to the priest and needy people, the shradh puja
is concluded. Also, a part of the food is offered to specific animals.
