Chhath Puja is an auspicious four-day festival that commences on the sixth day after

Diwali. Also, known as Surya Shashti, this is one of the most prominent festivals in

the Hindu culture which s celebrated with zest and fervor in the Northern states of

India, including Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Other parts of the country where Chhath

Puja is observed are Chandigarh, Mumbai, Gujarat, Delhi, and Jharkhand.


Chhath Puja is performed by devotees to seek the blessings from the Sun God and

his wife Usha to live a long, prosperous, and healthy life. Also, they take a dip in the

holy rivers and other water bodies. The rituals of Chhath Puja are considered a

Chhath Puja Method

On the day of the Chhath festival, a resolution is taken after bathing in the morning.

While taking the resolution, a mantra is recited by devotees. People practice Nirjala

fast for the entire day. Then in the evening, devotees bathe in the holy river or pond

and offer Arghya to the Sun God.

To offer Arghya three big baskets of bamboo are filled with a wide array of items,

including rice, red vermillion, turmeric, sugarcane, vegetable, milk, lemon, pear, and

other fruits, honey, sweets, rice laddus, kheer, etc. lamp is lightened and baskets are

descended into the river to offer Arghya to the Sun God.
