Dhanteras, also known as ‘Dhanatrayodash’ is one of the main festivals celebrated
by Hindus. The word ‘Dhan’ implies wealth and ‘Teras’ implies thirteen which further
means that this day falls on the thirteenth day of Krishna Paksha in the Hindu Lunar
Calendar. Dhanteras marks the beginning of Diwali, one of the biggest festivals in
India, and is usually observed one or two days before Diwali. On the auspicious
occasion of Dhanteras, people also worship Lord Yamaraja, the God of Death in the
night, and offer prayers to seek his blessings.
On this auspicious day, people purchase utensils or any jewelry to bring good luck,
prosperity, and wealth to their lives. Although there are no certain guidelines for
purchasing utensils and jewelry, people even opt for a small purchase like a spoon or
plate which is further worshipped to bring happiness and prosperity to the home. In
some cultures, even idols for Diwali puja are purchased and worshipped on
Dhanteras.
Dhanteras Puja Vidhi
The temple or altar at the home is chosen for performing Dhanteras Pooja. A
wooden chowki is covered with red cloth and some rice is spread on its right side. An
oil or ghee lamp is lightened and placed on the rice. Next, devotees spread some rice
on the surface to place idols of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha (on the left of
goddess Lakshmi). Idols of Lord Dhavantri and Lord Kubera can also be placed. In
last, puja is performed to offer prayers to all these goddesses and gods for a happier
and prosperous life.
