Dussehra, also called Dasara or Vijayadashmi, is an important Hindu festival that is
an ideal representation of the triumph of good over evil. This festival is celebrated
with great enthusiasm and fervor by Hindus every year across different parts of the
country. The day on which Dusshera is observed is on the tenth day of the Navratras,
which falls on the tenth day of Kartik or Ashwin month in the Hindu Lunar Calendar.
Known as Durga Puja or Vijayadashmi in East and North-east Indian states, people
celebrate the Maa Durga’s victory over the demon Mahishsura to protect dharma.
Known as Dussehra in the Northern and Western Indian states, people celebrate the
victory of Lord Rama over the demon Ravana to protect Mata Sita.
Moreover, Dusshera is considered an ideal day for commencing new businesses or
new investments. In some South Indian states, even small children are admitted to
the schools on the auspicious occasion of Dussehra.
Celebrations of the Dussehra Festival
On Dussehra, towering effigies of demon King Ravana, his son Meghanad, and his
brother Kumbhakaran are made as a symbol of evil and burnt down with fireworks
to remind the world that no matter what, Good always wins over Evil. Additionally,
the Dussehra festival is observed by organizing a theatrical enactment (Ram Lila) of
the life stories of Lord Rama, his wife Sita, and his brother Lakshman, and also how
Lord Rama defeated the demon Ravana. At Durga Puja, people in West Bengal, Bihar,
and Odisha sing folk songs and immerse the idols of Goddess Durga in the water
bodies.
