Govardhan Puja is observed on the day next to Diwali to worship Lord Krishna. This
Puja holds a special significance in Hindu culture as it is on this day that Lord Krishna
defeated Lord Indra by lifting Govardhan Parvat on his little finger and saving the
villagers and animals from the wrath of nature. The Govardhan Puja is observed by
devotees on the Pratipada tithi, Shukla paksha in the month of Kartik, as per the
Hindu Calendar. Also, known as Annakut Puja, the devotees of Lord Krishna offer him
wheat, rice, curry made from gram flour, and leafy vegetables.
Lord Krishna is worshipped by devotees on Govardhan Puja to seek his blessings for a
happier and prosperous life. A ‘mountain of food’ is offered by them to Lord Krishna
and this is the reason why food plays a vital role in this puja.
Govardhan Puja Rituals
One of the most important rituals of Govardhan Puja is making a small hill with the
help of cow dung and mud which represents the Govardhan Parvat. Lord Krishna and
the Govardhan Parvat are worshipped by devotees for saving the people of Braj
Bhoomi from floods and the wrath of Lord Indra. In some Indian states, an extensive
food platter of 56 kinds of different food items is also prepared by devotees.
Moreover, a milk bath is given to the idols of Lord Krishna, and are dressed in new
clothes and accessories.
