Karwa Chauth

Aug 26,2022 | By Hemant Bhardwaj

Karwa Chauth is a special day for married women as it provides them an opportunity

of appeasing Lord Shiva. On this auspicious day, married women observe a day-long

Nirjala fast until the visibility of the moon, worship Lord Shiva, and pray for their

husband’s long life. Here ‘Nirjala’ implies that married women do not eat food and

also do not even drink water on Karwa Chauth. When the moon is visible, they break

their fast with the help of their husband. There is a sheer significance in keeping fast

on Karwa Chauth as it is believed that both wife and husband might develop a long-

lasting relationship.

Here Karwa implies ‘earthen pot’ and Chauth implies ‘fourth’, which further refers to

the fourth day of Karthik’s month. From sunrise till moonrise, married women and

also some single girls observe fast on Karwa Chauth for the longevity of their

husband and finding their desired partner, respectively.

Karwa Chauth Celebrations

Karwa Chauth is widely celebrated in different parts of India. The married couple

participates in the rituals of Karwa Chauth to pray to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati

as well as the Moon and Lord Kartikeya for happy married life. Since this auspicious

day usually coincides with Sankashti Chaturthi, some also join the celebration of

Sankashti Chaturthi. Devotees organize Ganesha Puja to offer their prayers to him

and seek his blessings. It is believed that women in ancient times use to observe

Karwa Chauth Vrat pray for the safety of their husbands who used to go out in the

war.
